“I am Meera Sehgal. I go to Hudson Montessori School in Ohio. I am currently in 7th grade. I had learned about this fundraiser when one night my parents went to a concert where a lady was raising money for Ekal schools in India. I had been doing different community service projects since I was a little girl, but I had never done anything for some other country in the world. It really struck me that children in other places in the world do not get an education and that many children can get educated for just $365. Over the summer as this project kept on building. I decided rather than just getting money from my family I will start this fundraiser in my school. When I was home one day, I emailed my teacher telling her about this project and what my plan was to raise money. I knew going into a new community (middle school) and having new teachers this would be my opportunity to pursue something totally new. When I started school in September, I told the Middle School Class about Ekal and their mission. They thought it was a great idea to raise money for children around the same age as us and know that they could get an education. The next step after telling the class was to talk about it with the community service group in the Middle School. We discussed this idea and they thought we should definitely pursue this great idea of raising money for schools in India. In addition I am raising money from family and friends, so far totalling over $4,000. This will allow Ekal to build more than 10 schools. At school we are currently in the process of deciding what type of fundraiser. I am glad to be helping the children in India with literacy. I look forward to visiting India with my family in 2011 to help set-up schools with Ekal.
